THE COLONIES AT SAN ANTONIO
Upland, CA

The Colonies at San Antonio project offered unique opportunities for the development of the landscape open space and trails system. The focal point of the project was the restored 20-acre detention basin, a visual and recreational amenity to the community. The intent of landscape character was to be sympathetic to both the existing and historic influence of the region by the following design criteria:

• Create an early California landscape that utilized both native and non-native species, provide a water efficient landscape that addressed long-term maintenance concerns and the selection of landscape plant material to reflect the character of the local foothill area.

• Establish a community identity and character with a consistent and uniform streetscape to include hierarchy of intersection monumentation. Use materials sympathetic to the regional character of the area.

• Provide passive recreational facilities for picnicking, jogging, strolling, and viewing wildlife habitat. Create educational opportunities of the natural systems and habitat.

• Provide a system of community trails for convenient access between neighborhoods, commercial centers, and open space, with connection to the regional trail system along the Cucamonga Creek Channel.

• Restore the detention basin to a natural wetland/riparian habitat for passive recreational usage.
